Ecclesiastes 4:1-10

Again I looked and saw all the oppression that was taking place under the sun:
I saw the tears of the oppressed—
    and they have no comforter;
power was on the side of their oppressors—
    and they have no comforter.
And I declared that the dead,
    who had already died,
are happier than the living,
    who are still alive.
But better than both
    is the one who has never been born,
who has not seen the evil
    that is done under the sun.
And I saw that all toil and all achievement spring from one person’s envy of another. This too is meaningless, a chasing after the wind.
Fools fold their hands
    and ruin themselves.
Better one handful with tranquillity
    than two handfuls with toil
    and chasing after the wind.
Again I saw something meaningless under the sun:
There was a man all alone;
    he had neither son nor brother.
There was no end to his toil,
    yet his eyes were not contentwith his wealth.
“For whom am I toiling,” he asked,
    “and why am I depriving myself of enjoyment?”
This too is meaningless—
    a miserable business!
Two are better than one,
    because they have a good return for their labor:
10 If either of them falls down,
    one can help the other up.
But pity anyone who falls
    and has no one to help them up.

2 Peter 1:7-12

and to godliness, mutual affection; and to mutual affection, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But whoever does not have them is nearsighted and blind, forgetting that they have been cleansed from their past sins.
10 Therefore, my brothers and sisters,[a]make every effort to confirm your callingand election. For if you do these things, you will never stumble, 11 and you will receive a rich welcome into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Isaiah 49:20-26

20 The children born in the time of your bereavement
    will yet say in your hearing:
‘The place is too crowded for me;
    make room for me to settle.’
21 Then you will say in your heart,
    ‘Who has borne me these?
I was bereaved and barren,
    exiled and put away—
    so who has reared these?
I was left all alone—
    where then have these come from?’
22 Thus says the Lord God:
I will soon lift up my hand to the nations,
    and raise my signal to the peoples;
and they shall bring your sons in their bosom,
    and your daughters shall be carried on their shoulders.
23 Kings shall be your foster-fathers,
    and their queens your nursing-mothers.
With their faces to the ground they shall bow down to you,
    and lick the dust of your feet.
Then you will know that I am theLord;
    those who wait for me shall not be put to shame.
24 Can the prey be taken from the mighty,
    or the captives of a tyrant[a] be rescued?
25 But thus says the Lord:
Even the captives of the mighty shall be taken,
    and the prey of the tyrant be rescued;
for I will contend with those who contend with you,
    and I will save your children.
26 I will make your oppressors eat their own flesh,
    and they shall be drunk with their own blood as with wine.
Then all flesh shall know
    that I am the Lord your Saviour,
    and your Redeemer, the Mighty One of Jacob.
Jacob Flees with Family and Flocks ] Now Jacob heard that the sons of Laban were saying,   ‘Jacob has taken all that was our father’s; he has gained all this wealth from what belonged to our father
And the young man did not delay to do the thing, because he was delighted with Jacob’s daughter. Now he was the most honoured of all his family.
This is the story of the family of Jacob. Joseph, being seventeen years old, was shepherding the flock with his brothers; he was a helper to the sons of Bilhah and Zilpah, his father’s wives; and Joseph brought a bad report of them to their father
Jacob Brings His Whole Family to Egypt ] When Israel set out on his journey with all that he had and came to Beer-sheba, he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.

Tell the whole congregation of Israel that on the tenth of this month they are to take a lamb for each family, a lamb for each household.
