The I,Self,or executive function that pursues happiness must be able to regulate and shape the innate human capacities of thinking and emotions. But an older ideal of dominating the lower animalistic body and emotions no longer fits the evolutionary story.
A " higher" rational soul does not achieve self-regulation simply by dominating,suppressing or detaching from the "lower" irrational,physical,and emotional functions of the human being. If you create more smiles,you get more happiness.
You achieve immediate satisfaction and in the long run you gain more reliable friends. However,friends made by money are not genuine friends. Only friends made through human affection are genuine.
