Bryant Park

I can remember the time I spent working near Bryant Park. .... Like it was yesterday. It is still so, vivid in my mind. I was in college and needed a part time job, during the day because I had classes in the evening. I answered a part-time cashier wanted ad for "JACKS 99CENT STORE "in the news paper.

As I approached the store. I observed a middle aged man come out of the store and light a cigarette. I continued into the store. I walked up to the counter and asked for the manager. A Hispanic lady came to me from out the office behind the counter and said " Why do you want to speak to him? "

I said " I am here to inquire about the cashier's job that is being advertised in the paper. She responded. " oh, that's him outside, go on! Out there and tell him why your here." I glanced over my shoulder and it was the same gentlemen I watched come out of the store just moments ago.

I thought about what she said and wanted to oblige her, because she already had a position there and it appeared to be more than a cashier. ... My gut said Nah, don't go out there right now, wait until he come inside. And that little exchange of treating people like you want to be treated.

Got me the job!

At the time I didn't know he was on a break and it's only 15 minutes. Me waiting for him without knowing whether or not he would have time to see me about the job. Gained his respect, while we were talking this song played in the store

I was hired before the end of the song. We formed a bond that day. Me becoming a worthy cashier for him in the store was acknowledged between us,one busy day at the store, draws needed to be changed because cashier's were not to exceed.

Only a certain amount was allowed to have in their draw at any given time to avoid the store losing thousands of dollars in case of a robbery or theft, everyone was on the registers this day and no one was in the office to receive my cash.

And so, I put it in my pocket and continued on. I left and won't to school and realized. I had the money on me, I asked to be excuse from class immediately, called the store. The manager got on the phone and said bring it in tomorrow, your of schedule.

I was surprised, with a feeling of immense gratitude. Not only did he see me as responsible but trustworthy too. I appreciated that,... I returned the next day with the money gave to the manager on duty she counted it and gave me another draw to begin my work day.

I had to leave the job because me and my family moved to Westchester County.
