The first covenant was between God and Abraham. Jewish men are circumcised as a symbol of this covenant. You shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskins, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and you.

What are the three elements of a covenant?

There are three elements, a sign, a promise, and a meal. This was a classic bilateral covenant. The pile of stones was the sign, it reminded the parties of the promises they made and "sealed" with a meal.
